Lawsuits Allege Serious Kidney Failure can be caused by the use of Fleet bowel preparation products (oral sodium phosphate)
Often used in preparation for a colonoscopy, pre-surgery or another radiological procedure, the two dose regimen recommended by C.B. Fleet Co. Inc. and its generic equivalents have been alleged to cause serious renal (kidney) problems.

Lawsuits Allege Laxative Caused Kidney Failure

There have been several hundred individual lawsuits filed against CB Fleet across the United States. The plaintiffs in these lawsuits allege that they have suffered kidney failure, chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease as a direct result of using Fleet Phospho-Soda in a dose recommended by Fleet as "safe"; sadly many of these plaintiffs are undergoing dialysis while awaiting a kidney transplant.
Dr. Glen Markowitz, a professor of clinical pathology at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York, who was among the first researchers to document the problem of what's known as acute phosphate nephropathy, said it appears to be rare, but extremely serious when it occurs.
The FDA has stated the following factors increase your risk of developing kidney problems from the use of oral sodium phosphate:
- Advanced Age
- Decreased intravascular volume or kidney disease
- The use of medicines that affect renal perfusion or function, such as diurectics, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), and possibly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
Studies have also indicated that people with kidney or heart problems could be at an increased risk and have identified white women over the age of 60 as being particularly vulnerable.
